The world is now facing a major turning point. Until now, we have optimistically thought that the world is becoming more globalized, and as a result, people's lives will be enriched, many diseases will be overcome, and a safe and happy future awaits us. However, in the past few years, serious crises associated with globalization have come one after another, such as the spread of the new coronavirus infection worldwide, the global energy and food crisis caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and global warming due to the increase in carbon dioxide concentration associated with human activities, and the negative aspects of globalization have also become clear. At this turning point where the light and darkness of globalization may be reversed, what is truly needed is "knowledge" that flexibly moves back and forth between local and global, and people who acquire and practice that knowledge.Akita Prefectural University is a new university established in 1999 and is a science university with many excellent facilities and the Faculty and Graduate School of Systems Science and Technology, and the Faculty and Graduate School of Bioresource Sciences. Akita Prefecture is blessed with nature, has resources such as exten-sive farmland and forests, and is developing futuristic industries such as electronic components and devices, and is an excellent place for the practice of knowledge that develops from local to global.Upon assuming this position, I would like to develop Akita Prefectural University from the following perspectives.Cultivate humanity ‒ tough, gentle, challengingUniversities are places to nurture intellectual professionals, but it is necessary to cultivate the human skills that are the prerequisites for this.
