Internships provide students with valuable opportunities to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings while exploring future career paths. Working under the supervision of experienced professionals at host organizations or companies, students gain practical skills and insights through hands-on training. These internships are recognized as part of the GSICS curriculum and are worth two academic credits.As an intern, I worked at the Human Rights Watch Tokyo Office for six months. I was involved in assisting with the preparation of research reports and advocacy work with policymakers. Those experiences gave me a lot of insights for both my researchand career development.I appreciate my academic supervisors and senior students who had already participated in internships for giving me very helpful advice during the application process. My internship in Uganda was both an immense honour and a defining moment in my academic journey. Working within a high-level government environment, I gained into policy deliberations, administrative coordination, and the complex realities of public leadership. I observed collaborative efforts in the development of SDG policies, engaged with seasoned civil servants, and witnessed how strategic decisions at levels shape national development outcomes.What made the experience even more profound was the realization of its rarity: as a Ghanaian student from a Japanese university interning in Uganda. This awareness has deepened my sense of “global” and brought vividly to life the very issues I had encountered in lecture rooms.
