He recently published a book on this topic which centers on the site of Mount Togakushi (Nagano Prefecture). Besides Shugendō, Carter has published articles on ‘dark’ pilgrimage in the Edo period and the contemporary phenomenon of ‘power spots’ (pawāsupotto). His current research concerns intersections between mountain worship and mountaineering in Japan’s modern period as well as a project on sacred graffiti at temples and shrines in the country.
