What is the real meaning of globalization? How can we ensure that the various dimensions of globalization contribute positively to greater peace, cooperation and understanding between nations? What roles do language and culture play in achieving these goals? What forms of knowledge and skills concerning language and culture do the youth of today – and the leaders of tomorrow – need in order to take an active part in promoting them? Located in the center of Japan, an ideal site from which to study and experience both the historical roots and the latest developments of international society, Nagoya University’s Linguistics and Cultural Studies MA program has been specifically designed to respond to such questions and meet such needs. The program will provide you with a transhistorical and multidimensional understanding of English, Japanese and other languages and cultures through a wide range of courses underpinned by a sound knowledge of linguistic and cultural studies methodologies and a thorough grounding in fundamental research skills. The Japan-in-Asia Cultural Studies Program (JACS) undergraduate and graduate programs offer students the opportunity to explore the rich and complex relations between Japan and other East Asian countries. With particular emphasis on cultural history, cinema and screen cultures, and modern literature, the curriculum is designed to help students master general academic skills such as critical thinking, analytical reading, and effective communication skills while acquiring a broad perspective on Japanese culture in Asia and specialized knowledge in one or more discipline. JACS aims to produce active and productive members of global society, and to play a key role in facilitating cultural exchange and friendship between Japan and the world. In addition, the graduate program offers opportunities to interact with internationally distinguished scholars from different countries at international conferences, workshops, and other events organized regularly in Nagoya and locations around Japan and the world. A good third of our graduates have advanced to MA and PhD programs abroad and in Japan, while the majority found jobs in a wide range of fields, including government services and large companies both in Japan as well as their home countries.
