In order to achieve sustainable and safe environment and society using limited resources efficiently, risks from natural, technological and human-induced hazards are quantitatively analyzed, estimated, and evaluated. For managing those risks efficiently by reducing, avoiding, or retaining them from the viewpoint of society as a whole, comprehensive research and education are conducted in the field of socioeconomic frame, planning and design methods, and the methodologies of risk analysis, estimation, and evaluation. Tomio Miwa / Miho IryoTo maintain and develop a good spatial environment in cities, regions, and national land, social infrastructure facilities should be properly planned, maintained, and managed as well as operated efficiently and effectively. In this unit, we conduct education and research on comprehensive planning and management, including the use of national land, planning, design, and operation of traffic networks, and construction, maintenance, and management of social infrastructure facilities in order for both developing and developed nations to fit their regions and cities to their respective social and economic development levels, and make their societies stronger in the face of disasters and accidents and sustainable in terms of the environment and energy. Our education and research also focuses on analysis and evaluation of the impact of the above-mentioned issues on people’s lifestyles and the environment, and related government policies.
