Based on policy studies, business administration, and political measures for sustainability, this unit takes an inter-disciplinary approach. We collaborate closely with colleagues from other social science disciplines (i.e.colleagues in other units) such as economics, legal & political studies sociology, and geography. We often work with experts outside of our department, too. We offer a wide variety of research and education opportunities, including theoretical work and fieldwork.Mutsumi Matsumoto / Yukihiro Wakuta / Minoru Nakada / Makiko NakanoIssues exist in various aspects of the social environment, such as economic and business aspects; living environments, production, and transportation in cities and rural areas; geo-environmental issues vs. productivity/economic growth; the relationship between economic development and the environment; and management and organization strategies of corporations. This course offers education and research in socioeconomic policies and business strategies that would resolve these issues. Specifically, the program contents include new economic geography, spatial economics, game theory, and theoretical analyses of environmental economics and endogenous theory; demonstration and quantitative analyses of spatial econometrics and environmental economics; and business analyses of theories of management organization and strategic management. Using these as the core, the course aims to build basic and applied skills required in conducting analyses from the viewpoint of economics, statistics, and business administration.Ko Nomura / Yoshiko Naiki / Yoko Masuzawa / Tomohiko Ohno The Environmental Law and Politics unit is staffed with researchers in both the law and politics fields. Our researchers in law specialize in environmental law and policy, international environmental law, etc., while our researchers in politics specialize in ecological politics, etc. Environmental issues are political issues involving conflicting values and interests; therefore resolution of such issues requires good understanding of the process and establishment of adequate legal and political systems. This course helps understand the political aspect of environmental issues and explores how the law can help to resolve the issues; through this, the course aims to establish the fundamental theory on domestic and international environmental laws and ecopolitics.Nobuhiko Nibe / Masashi Tachikawa / Yasushi Maruyama / Noriyuki Kawamura / Kenji Muroi / Yasuhiro Kamimura / Yasutaka Fukui / Mai YoshimuraSociology is a scientific discipline that seeks to explain social phenomena and social problems by focusing on interactions among people. It is necessary to understand the nature of social relations and social structures in order to think about the future of human society and how we can develop it sustainably. The Department of Sociology at Nagoya University has become a major center for both theoretical and empirical studies. We aim to formulate sociological theory from an Asian perspective while drawing from all of the discipline's traditions and trends. We research a wide variety of issues in Japan and abroad, employing both qualitative and quantitative methods. We seek to contribute to resolving social problems, including making policy recommendations.Fieldwork in Taiwan
