The office helps students adapt to living in Japan and also enjoy a fulfilling campus life alongside their Japanese peers through counseling, career support, Japanese culture experience programs, and environmental study tours. In addition, the office offers interactive-learning and cultural-exchange programs and facilitates mutual understanding among International and Japanese students beyond the barriers that may divide research areas. The International Office opened a communication lounge in 2021, where students and faculty can socialize and communicate in an informal atmosphere. The lounge is often used for student orientation sessions, cultural-exchange events, English Café, Japanese language studies, and other events. The lounge is also a place for group- and self-studies, and the International Office will continue to create an environment that accelerates communication and exchange.Furthermore, the International Office utilizes its network of alums and facilitates the development of students’ global mindset through research exchange programs with overseas universities. This program has been established as a master’s course to foster future environmental leaders who will contribute to solve environmental problems faced by Asian and African countries. The ratio of international students to Japanese students is approximately 2 to 1, and the program includes a mandatory global research internship, as well as a study tours in or outside Japan. All programs and instruction are given in English, and the students who finish this program are awarded a Certificate together with the master’s degree.Solving issues which threaten the sustainability of human society requires trans-disci-plinary research involving various stakeholders in society; to achieve this, it is impera-tive to develop human resources who can implement practical activities to build a sustainable society. The objective of the Research Center, led by the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, is to drive the cross-campus education and research programs required to do exactly that. The Research Center is comprised of two departments, the Department of Clinical Ecology® Consulting, which engages in education and social contribution through community-universi-ty collaboration, and the International Research Department for Sustainable Transport and Cities, which promotes international outreach. The Center contributes to the cross-campus activities of the ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) Program through the Collaboration of 6 Graduate Schools. At the same time, it closely collaborates with the Research Center for Future Earth, which participates in Future Earth, an international research initiative responding to global environmental changes.Basing its activities on the principle of cross-disciplinary collaboration between regional stakeholders and researchers covering diagnostic and therapeutic studies for building sustainable communities, the Department of Clinical Ecology® Consulting serves as the Secretariat of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy JAPAN. The Department provides recommendations for commissioned research, independent studies, student studies, consultations, lectures, training and other projects. The department also provides postdoctoral fellows and student interns the opportunity to participate in projects, as part of its efforts to develop skilled professionals and to support career development in the environmental field. The department undertakes management of the Integrated Environmental Studies Course, in which students learn clinical environmental studies through fieldwork. The International Research Department for Sustainable Transport and Cities aims to resolve issues facing cities and transport systems by defining sustainable co-development, with consideration of relationships with surrounding regions and global communities, and through driving global collaboration for the necessary global comparative studies. By collaborating with the Department of Clinical Ecology® Consulting, the department ensures that the results of the latest research are reflected in training and education.*To participate in this program, applicants must register for the master’s course, either at the Department of Sustainable Development Studies, Department of Environmental Engineering and Architecture, or the Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Graduate School of Engineering.Research Center affiliated with GSESEducational Program
