The objective of this program is to expand studies and research beyond a specialized field, to encourage students to actively participate in clinical environmental studies that link diagnostic and therapeutic fields, and, as a result, to develop students with broad perspectives.2. Graduation Requirements: Completion of the On-site Research Training in Clinical Environmental Studies (3 credits) and the Seminar on Basic SDGs (2 credits). Students who have completed this program will be awarded a certificate of completion in addition to the degree.3. The subjects for the doctoral course in the program are as shown below:The Graduate School of Environmental Studies provides courses in a wide array of disciplines in the format of lectures, field research, and hands-on studies. From the viewpoint of research, however, it is often difficult to expand the purview outside of the discipline and research lab to which students belong.Nagoya University Education and Research Center for Sustainable Co-Development (ERCSCD) offers interdisciplinary research internships within the graduate school. The objective is to provide opportunities for students to gain first-hand experience in another department within the Graduate School of Environmental Studies and expose them to research subjects and methods different from those of their discipline. Students who complete 30 hours of the interdisciplinary research internship receive the Certificate of Completion from ERCSCD. Those completing 90 internship hours are awarded the “Internship” credits recognized by the graduate school. The UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) was held in Nagoya in November 2014. Aiming to achieve the outcome of the conference, the “Global Action Programme,” Nagoya University submitted a commitment to UNESCO to enhance its “ESD Program.” This program was launched in 2013 based on this commitment.Graduate students at Nagoya University, who are expected to become leaders of a sustainable future, must have a basic understanding of and share values, principles, and knowledge of sustainable development as a liberal art. Moreover, they must gain the skills and techniques to draw solutions from their knowledge. Led by Graduate School of Environmental Studies, the ESD program organizes and implements a program focused on the understanding and practical applications of SDGs through the collaboration of 6 graduate schools: Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences, Graduate School of International Development, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Humanities, and Graduate School of Economics. For master's degree candidates of Nagoya University, up to 10 credits for courses taken at other graduate schools are recognized toward their degrees; thus, candidates can take advantage of this system to take the courses they need.Resolution of urgent environmental issues, brought to light by SDGs, requires collaboration by various professionals dealing with those challenges on the frontlines of various parts of societies. Considering such needs, the Graduate School of Environmental Studies opened the Transdisciplinary Environmental Studies Course in the academic year 2022 for adult learners newly admitted to the doctoral course. The Transdisciplinary Environmental Studies Course is a part of Nagoya University’s efforts to realize “an open college of the future” that encourages trans-disciplinary collaboration by the community and the academia as equal partners. The course has three notable features as described below:Feature ① - Research focusing on problem-solving led by a team of teaching staff・Led by the head teaching advisor, a team of teaching staff members from various disciplines supports research to solve urgent environmental issues that we face.Feature ② - Flexible curriculum for students with professions・Curriculum will be redesigned and improved to accommodate the needs of professionals who are simultaneously attending the school.Feature ③ - Research grants to accelerate the community-academia collaboration・Upon approval of students’ applications, a research grant equivalent to the students’ tuition is provided to the research lab where they belong.
