9School of Regional DesignThe Department of Civil Engineering and Regional Design offers a fundamental knowledge of civil engineering to construct and design social infrastructure which supports daily lives of people. The students will be trained to be civil engineers who are aware and consider technological development or proposal for countermeasure which is the most suitable for individual region from multiple viewpoints such as the social situation, the life style for people and the natural environment. Moreover, the department enhances practical abilities and resourcefulness of the students by providing technical experience at construction sites and getting the students involved in solving domestic social issues. Especially, the department emphasizes an interdisciplinary education encompassing various subjects in order to prepare them for involvement in community design, international projects, and disaster management, which expands the range of conventional civil engineering and helps new type of civil engineers to cope with various fields and people both in Japan and in foreign countries.Department of Civil Engineering and Regional DesignSince its foundation in 1978, our department provides high quality education in both architectural design and building engineering. Our program is designed to develop architects and building engineers who have a strong background in the fundamental principles of engineering, and who understand the impact of their work on social sustainability in respect to energy use, natural hazards, and the aging of the population. Our program is characterized by a collaboration with regional industry and government agencies to enhance practical engineering skills as well as management skills among professionals of many different disciplines. Department of Architecture and Urban DesignIn this department, in order to comprehend how communities are formed and to understand their problems, knowledge is acquired from a wide range of subjects from various disciplines. While majoring in specialized fields such as public policy, local autonomy, economics, the environment, culture, eating habits, tourism, social welfare, community education, NPOs, to name a few, learning will be practically applied to cultivate the students’ abilities in regional design. In addition, students deepen their learning through visiting and experiencing various sites with the cooperation of the residents of the area. Through such education, participants of the course are prepared for leadership roles in various government agencies, private enterprises, and NPOs that will lead communities into the 21st century.Department of Community Design
