12School of EngineeringDepartment of Fundamental EngineeringThe School of Engineering has been reorganized in 2019 to integrate the separate departments of mechanical and electrical engineering, applied chemistry, and information science into a unified Department of Fundamental Engineering. In their first year of study, students pursue courses in general engineering fundamentals. At the beginning of a second year, students choose one of three engineeringspecialties –– the “Material and Environmental ChemistryCourse”, the “Mechanical Systems Engineering Course”,or the “Information, Electronics, and Optics Course” –– and pursue subjects specialized to each course. Students are also required to complete several interdisciplinary courses in order to broaden their knowledge and viewpoints. The School of Engineering also cooperates with two research centers located on campus. The Center for Optical Research and Education is the only research and education facility in optical engineering in Japan, and provides courses in basic and applied optics. The Innovation Center for Research and Engineering Education supports students carrying out applied research through collaborations with companies. These aim to foster the human resources required to create the values and services that future society needs.Material and Environmental Chemistry CourseMechanical Systems Engineering CourseInformation,Electronics, and Optics CourseThis course provides the knowledge and skills to solve the problems about environment and material science. Students study six specialized compulsory subjects, three student experiments, and over thirty elective subjects, and do thesis research in the fourth-year. These education and research programs cover a wide range of academic disciplines centered around chemistry as follows.•Development of highly-functional material•Solutions to environmental and energy problems•Atomic and molecule-controlling nanotechnology•Biotechnology related to medicine and agricultureMechanical Systems Engineering is a key area of engineering required in all industrial fields today. The life of contemporary people is supported by various kinds of machines, including not only industrial products used in daily life, but also those used in agriculture, construction and medicine. This course aims to develop engineers and researchers who will create original branches of learning and technology and drive technological innovations in the twenty-first century.Information and electronics technologies take a huge part in society and our daily lives. TheInformation, Electronics, and Optics Course offers education opportunities that enable students to develop knowledge and skills in electronic circuits, electromagnetics, computer systems, KANSEI information science, image processing, information network systems, display, holography, optical engineering and solar energy.Lectures, exercises, and student activities are integrated in the Course to inspire the creativity of the students.
